He was awake. Underneath him was lumpy ground, so he had to be in the tent, but he was definitely awake, and he couldn't figure out why until he heard the voice again.

"Hey, Cloud?"

"Muh," he replied, sitting up and trying to force his eyes open. "Aerith? What time is it?"

"Come outside!" she whispered, tugging on his arm, and he crawled out of his sleeping bag and followed her out of the tent.

The cold night breeze on his face helped to wake him up, and he blinked at her face. More visible than he would have thought, this far from a town. She was wearing a coat over her pajamas; that would have been a good idea for him, too, he thought. "What's going on?"

"Look up," she said, pointing, and he looked up at the sky to see a curtain of light, bluish and green, dancing overhead. He looked back at her; she was rapt, smiling, staring upward, her face somehow ethereal in the wavering, pale light. He looked back to the sky, realizing he was smiling now, too.

"Was this why you wanted to head north?" he asked.

"Yeah," she said, and he could hear the happiness in her voice. "I know sometimes you can see them north of Wutai around this time of year, so I thought it was worth a try. I always wanted to see them - my mother used to talk about the northern lights... my birth mother, I mean, not mom. She loved them. I think she used to live really far up north."

"Oh," he said, not sure what to say, and he looked at her again, but she was smiling. The lights were beginning to fade, above. "I'm... sorry."

"No, I got to see them because of you! Thank you," she said, and then, to his surprise, she hugged him, and hung on. He put his arms around her after a moment, and just held her, all thoughts of coats and sleep banished for the moment.
