lirillith: (armed Sayaka)
[personal profile] lirillith
As I continue to rampage through the PMMM prompts at[community profile] fic_promptly, I think I'll meter out my posting here of the the remaining fics I've written this week, and take a break to talk about the fact I'm writing at all.

This is kind of new for me, for several reasons.  Except for a brief dabbling in Trigun fanfic, I've stuck to game canons.  I'm also not used to being a fan of something so recent.  I'm not used to having so much material outside of the canon: drama CDs, interviews with the creators, production materials...

I mean, there's a lot of all-there-in-the-manual for Suikoden games, but I had my doubts about the reliability of some of the extra-canon material (or at least about the reliability of the people translating and disseminating that info.)  There was some of that for Final Fantasy games, but they had the same problem - the info wasn't all that widely available (when I have found any such info, it's been hidden away in message boards, to my dismay) and there's the risk that the one or two people that have it are translating it with bias, or just translating poorly.  I remember a point when some mistranslated FF4 info led people to believe that Rosa had once been involved with Kain, but dumped him because Cecil, as a Dark Knight, was going places socially and Kain wasn't.

The PMMM wiki has popularity going for it.  Enough people like this show that a sort of equilibrium is reached and enforced.  See, for instance, all the articles that take a very artificial "some yuri fans think..." tone when talking about pairings.  Or the fact that they recently cleared off some speculation from character pages.  If one person makes a mistake or tries to push a really skewed reading, the sheer volume will correct it eventually.

But it's also kind of frustrating, because, for instance, I just found out that a chunk of my Mami/Kyoko fic was Jossed by the newest drama CD (which did, however, give me more info for future fics about them...)  I'm not used to working in canons where new material becomes available regularly; I pretty much quit writing FF7 fic when Compilation materials started being released.  I've been holding off on writing any Tiger & Bunny until the season's over, too.

And there's the fact that all of my other canons have been set in fantasy (or science fiction) worlds.  PMMM has magic, and technology that we don't have, but it's also very reality-linked; people have TVs, cell phones, and computers, they eat Pringles and Pocky, they play DDR, even if the names of the products are altered.  Christianity exists, and it's part of Kyoko's frame of reference, so if I want to write Xmas fic, I don't have to stretch (and feel faintly guilty) like I did when I shoehorned those into FF6 and FF7.  But it also means I need to check things against fact.

It's just different.  But it's also exciting, because SO MANY IDEAS, SQUEE!!!
