He washed ashore, battered and half-broken, someplace near Jidoor.
The doctor says he’s lucky to be alive, and avoids his questions about the state of the world. The girl who looks after him has a plain face, a sweet smile, and a Marandan accent, and she tells him about making it out on the last boat before the Empire came.
The Empire's gone now. He watched Gestahl die. And he watched helplessly as Kefka disturbed the balance of magic - he's not even sure what that means.
When he's healed enough to walk, stiffly and leaning on a cane, he goes outside. He sees it immediately, and the joke about arthritis dies on his lips. The tower is hazy with distance, but impossibly huge.
He has to find the others, because he knows he can’t destroy Kefka alone.
