I hadn't realized until he was gone how much we relied on Gremio. In every way; he was more the center of the household than Master Teo or even Tir. After he died, it seemed as though Tir pulled away from us, as though we couldn't seem to stay together. Conversations were awkward for the first time.

He came back, in the end, but something had changed. We sort of tried to draw back together, but it didn't really work. After the victory, after all the meetings and negotiations and funerals and headcounts, and finally establishing that no one had any idea what happened to Flik and Viktor, after all of it Tir finally got the chance to spend a night in his old room instead of snatching scraps of sleep in an armchair or on a bench or with his head on a desk. Gremio made stew, and we thought of inviting people but decided not to in the end. It was good. It was almost like the old days, if you didn't look at the empty chairs, if you didn't notice the way Tir was always the first one to stop laughing.

He went to bed early. Gremio tidied up while Pahn and I sat around with cups of jasmine tea, and Pahn started brooding immediately. He must have had it bottled up since - since fighting Master Teo, I guess. Since telling the Guard about Ted. He started talking about unworthiness, about purifying himself through solitude, meditation, and training - bull, and I told him so, but he wasn't listening. Gremio didn't say much, but I wasn't all that surprised that he was gone that morning along with Tir. I thought I'd heard steps in the hall before dawn, but I hadn't gotten up to check, and Pahn sleeps like the dead.

Pahn was gone the morning after that.
