He'd timed it perfectly; it was just growing dark when she came out on the deck.
"Where are we?" she asked, and yawned.
"Just over Jidoor," he said.
"At Carnival? Setzer, I told you I'm not interested."
"You might be amazed," he said. "Come over here."
"I wouldn't be," she said, joining him at the rail but with her back to it, and to the city below. "I know myself, and how I act at those things; I can never let go enough to really enjoy carousing, and watching everyone else makes me feel worse about that, which only makes it harder to really relax and enjoy it--"
"Celes," he interrupted, gently. "I was only joking. I wasn't suggesting we go below. I just wanted to show it to you from up here."
"Oh. ....thank you."
"Look," he says, turning her face with his hand, and after a moment she turned fully to lean against the rail. She was watching the city below, the streets and plazas outlined in colored lanterns or in some places electric lights on strings, red and purple and blue, and even the houses bearing lanterns or lights. From the main plaza, the first of the fireworks shot up like a blossom of green flame, catching his eye; he heard her intake of breath and looked back to her to see a smile.
"That's... lovely," she said, after a moment, but her face had been gratifying enough. She just looked pleased, faintly happy, and she'd let her features soften in a way he'd seldom seen, never because of anything he'd done.
