The rune is cooler than the rest of her skin, but not cold; she seems to feel the winter weather less than she used to, but draws closer to the fire than before when she comes indoors. He serves hot tea and keeps his worrying silent, a feat Borus can't achieve. Sometimes she complains to him that Borus is smothering her, and sometimes she says as much to Borus himself, and other times, she just says "yes, mother," when Borus frets, and usually she smiles to take the sting from the words.

He thinks Borus's worry is the same as his own, that the rune will change her, draw her away from him. From them. Tales always end with the bearer of the True Rune wandering, and they can't be sure that she'll return from every journey the way she did from the last.

There are moments when he thinks the rune has changed her, somehow. He stood once at a door, and heard her say, very quietly, "Why didn't you say anything?" He'd cleared his throat, managed to say "My lady?" and she'd startled at his voice. He'd never asked if she was speaking to him or to herself or to some other presence; once she'd she'd told him that the Grassland belief in spirits wasn't mere superstition, and the emotion with which she said it unnerved him even more than the thing she said.

And once, on a cold night when he found her standing before an open window, her gloves off and the orange uniform coat unbuttoned, she'd closed the window and offered him her hand, palm up. He'd traced the chilly spirals of her family's fate with a fingertip, and he wasn't sure he breathed until she smiled at him again. She asked him to stay, and they drank tea and stirred the fire up again, banishing the chill at least from that night.
