They'd been jumping from rock to rock for so long that they could almost forget the jumps were over a lake of magma. But as they examined a rock that was just a bit further from solid ground than any of the others had been, and the treasure chest beyond it, just visible through the heat haze, the magma was very much on their minds.
"I'm not chancing it," Terra said.
"I could probably do it and sling someone over my shoulder," Sabin said. "I pulled it off on that train, remember, Cyan?"
"Vividly," the knight said, with clear distaste. "That only accounts for two. A pity Sir Shadow is not with us. He might carry another."
"Bird thing," Gau suggested.
"What, a monster?" Terra asked, looking up, though his tone hadn't sounded like a warning.
"No! Your bird," he clarified.
"Oh! Palidor?"
"Hey, that's an idea," Sabin agreed. "See if it can take us across. He. Is, um, is Palidor a he or a she?"
"He can't," she said. "Not for long enough to get us over the rocks."
"Couldn't you transform and fly?" Sabin asked her.
"Not in here! The ceilings are too low. Even if I could get across myself, I couldn't carry anyone. I'd risk dipping your feet in the lava."
"It would be unsafe for her to go alone," Cyan said. "Or for our group to split up along any lines. The monsters here are vicious, Sir Sabin."
"Yeah, I noticed. You're right."
"Perhaps it simply cannot be reached," Cyan continued. "If your treasure-hunting friend was unable to reach it, I fail to see how mere mortal greed could overcome the obstacle."
"It's not really greed, with Locke," she said absently, but she was scanning the rocks. "I think you're right, though, we need to just give up for now. Maybe later the path will open up, or we'll see something we're missing."
"Bird monster," Gau announced suddenly, and they all looked up, where he was pointing, to see another attacker approach. Terra smiled at Gau - he'd given her an idea - and held up a magicite crystal. He whooped with delight, and he was the first to leap onto Palidor's back.
