Once she realized how she felt about her strategist and second-in-command, Chris Lightfellow immediately realized how complicated these feelings could make her life. She risked the appearance of favoritism, for one. Insubordination, if rumors spread and the men began to feel the command structure was corrupt. Much of her nascent legend cast her as a maiden, the shining, virgin war-goddess on a pedestal of silver, and disrupting that legend by taking a lover might provoke a backlash that could put her command at risk, or threaten Salome as well.
She wasn't quite disciplined enough not to let any hint of her feelings through, however, and she had reason to believe that Salome felt the same. She also had reason to believe that he'd considered the dangers just as thoroughly as she had - perhaps more so - and had reached the same, unspoken conclusion.
But when he was injured in one of the first skirmishes with Tinto, she rushed to the tent where the wounded were gathered, absently spreading the healing mist of her rune around her as she searched the crowds for his face. When she found him, she took in at a glance the sling on his arm and the absence of blood elsewhere.
"The bone has already been set, my lady," he began. "There is no need to waste runic power--"
Cautious of his arm, she caught him by the shoulders, rather than flinging her arms around him as she'd wanted. "As if it's a resource to be hoarded. Honestly, Salome!"
"Chris?"
She rested her head on his shoulder. "Damn the political consequences anyway. I can live with gossip."
"I would have said 'life's too short,'" he said, and when she looked at him, there was a wry smile on his face. "But of course for you it isn't."
"All the more reason," she said, and kissed him.
