Homura stays away from them all. Sayaka contracts, and Mami survives; Mami mediates between Kyoko and Sayaka when they meet. The three of them protect Madoka, and while Homura can’t trust them entirely, worlds like this seem to keep her safe longer.
At the beach, Kyoko and Sayaka fill their water guns and chase each other over the sand, laughing like children. Madoka hangs back, with Mami, working up the nerve to enter the cold water.
Homura watches from a distance. Something could always go wrong. Something always has.
Never comfortable in the sun, Homura’s still come on so many of these trips she’s lost track. In her memory, Madoka’s happy, mischievous; she surprises Homura with a cold soda can on her skin, pulls her out into the water. Later she falls asleep in the shade of Mami’s umbrella, her hand in Homura’s – but no, that was a different world. How many times has it happened? It’s certainly not every time, but it does happen, and it changes; the suits change, the details, the girls who are with them. Homura remembers Madoka in blue, in green, but usually pink frills, like the dress Homura never wants her to wear.
