The old man's house smells musty and medicinal, but she doesn't want to wait outside, so she lurks at the top of the stairs and tries not to pace. Locke's down there. So is Rachel. And the Phoenix.

She can't bear to think what it would do to him if the Phoenix failed. She can't imagine he'd abandon a revived Rachel. She tries not to think at all, but it's impossible.

He'll come upstairs with his arm around the girl he loved and lost and rescued at last, and Celes will greet the young woman and never let the cracks show.

He'll come upstairs, smiling, and she'll prepare herself, and he'll say "I brought her back, but she doesn't remember me. It's for the best," and he'll take her in his arms and say she's the only one for him.

He comes upstairs at last, and before she can try to read his face, he tells her what happened. Rachel's gone. She forgives him. He's free.

He doesn't embrace her; she barely speaks. They walk to the airship as he pulls an endless stream of loot from his bag, handing her piece after piece until it's heaped in her arms and they're both laughing.

It's better than fantasy, she thinks.
